| Zebra
mussels are ravenous filter-feeding organisms. They are small in
size, about 1-2 inches, and have tiny stripes down their shells,
giving them their name. Zebra mussels use their byssal threads,
or string, to attach to a variety of surfaces, including anchors,
docks and other mussels.
Zebra mussels have continued to spread throughout American waters
since their invasion in 1986. They most likely transport themselves
by hitching a ride on boat trailers, anchors and chains and other
watercrafts.
